| Biography of interviewed (Biographie de l’interviewé) | Micheline Herc was born in 1937 in Warsaw, where she lived with her parents. She was two years old when the Germans and Soviets divided up Poland. To escape the Germans, her parents left for Białystok, then Vilnius. Refusing to take Soviet citizenship (her father was prepared to, but her mother firmly refused), they were deported in June 1940 to the Arkhangelsk region, where they stayed until the Poles were amnestied in August 1941. Then they left for Central Asia by train and boat to a small town near Tashkent, then to Kazakhstan, where Micheline lived alongside the Kazakhs, learnt their language and took part in their cultural and religious activities. In May 1946, they were finally allowed to leave the USSR, crossed the devastated Ukraine and got to Poland, where they discovered that all their family who had stayed had been exterminated. They went to Warsaw and then Łódź. There, her parents prepared to leave for France, where an uncle was expecting them. They arrived in Paris in September 1946. Micheline trained to be a doctor and specialised in psychiatry. Now she is retired and has taken up painting again: the devastations of war she saw from the train home, the landscapes of the Russian Far North and the colours of the Kazakh steppes recur in her paintings and her memories. |
| Biography of interviewed in French (Biographie de l’interviewé en français) | Micheline Herc naît en 1937, à Varsovie, où elle vit avec ses parents. Elle a deux ans, lorsque les Allemands et les Soviétiques se partagent la Pologne. Pour fuir les Allemands, ses parents partent à Bialystok, puis à Vilnius. Refusant de prendre la citoyenneté soviétique (son père était prêt à le faire, mais sa mère a fermement refusé), ils sont déportés en juin 1940 dans la région d’Arkhangelsk, où ils résident jusqu’à l’amnistie des Polonais, en août 1941. Ils partent alors vers l’Asie centrale, en train, puis en bateau, pour arriver dans une petite ville près de Tachkent, puis au Kazakhstan, où Micheline vit auprès des Kazakhs, apprend leur langue et participe à leurs activités culturelles et religieuses. En mai 1946, ils peuvent enfin quitter l’URSS, traversent l’Ukraine dévastée et arrivent en Pologne où ils découvrent que toute leur famille, restée sur place, a été exterminée. Ils vont à Varsovie puis à Łódź. Là, ses parents préparent leur départ vers la France, où un oncle les attend. Ils arrivent à Paris en septembre 1946. Micheline y fera une carrière de médecin en se spécialisant en psychiatrie. Aujourd’hui elle est à la retraite et a repris la peinture : les dévastations de la guerre vues lors de son retour en train, les paysages du Grand Nord russe et les couleurs des steppes kazakhes sont très présents dans ses toiles comme dans ses souvenirs. |
